Description:
Cochins are known the world over for being big friendly balls of fluff and feathers. They don't lay very well but are popular because of their sweet personality and fantastic mothering qualities. Cochins became famous in the 1800s when this Chinese breed was given as a gift to Queen Victoria of England, who absolutely adored them.

Questions
Baby Chicks: Partridge Cochin Female
Loretta and Dolly are calm and talkative ladies. They are both beautiful and have enough color variation that I can easily tell them apart. Loretta is very mild in personality and by far my least enthusiastic chook but such a sweet little ball of fluff. Dolly is lighter in color, almost orange, she has much more spunk than her sister and never stops chatting. Dolly is a very “independent” lady and often wanders from the flock, she is stocky, and full of personality. I am giving 4 stars for Dollys initial failure to thrive, she was much smaller than all of her flock mates at every milestone and had to be nursed and hand fed every times daily. She seems to be holding her own now but I truthfully believe she wouldn’t make it for at least six weeks. I do believe she may have a genetic abnormality that has affected her based on color and excessively stocky frame. She is a wonderful bird now and I hope she continues to be healthy, happy, and thrive.

We are so happy to hear that your girls are bringing you happiness! We are sorry that Dolly had a difficult time in the beginning of her life but are thankful you were able to nurse her into a full recovery. She may be smaller due to her earlier trouble as a younger girl but she sounds like she is going to be quite the pleasure to have around for hopefully many years to come. While we understand how you may suspect a genetic abnormality, we have not seen reports to indicate such a problem in the breeding flock but have made note of your concern to bring to the attention of the hatchery. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please let us know. We are always happy to help!

Sweet natured, a little timid, but subtly curious in their own way. Their feathered feet are adorable. Their feathers are coming in and the penciling is already showing- it's clear how gorgeous they will become.

We are so happy that your little one is feathering out well and beginning to show those beautiful markings special to her breed! Hopefully with a bit of coaxing (use treats - we are not above bribes), she will likely become quite a trusting little one and bring even more happiness to your flock. Please let us know any time if we can answer any questions, we are happy to help!

Baby Chicks: Partridge Cochin Female
Seven chicks--one male, six females--arrived during an unseasonable October freeze. Lost one female in the first few days but the others were energetic, curious, and full of personality from the start. Got the first pullet eggs the first week of March. They are very happy in their Eglu coop and small pasture. The hens give an average of five medium to large brown eggs a day. They are very friendly and a joy to watch as they range through the high grass of their pasture. I named the rooster "George," and he is proving to be a great protector, sounding the alarm whenever a hawk or eagle gets too close. Very happy with the service, shipping, and of course our young flock of Partridge Cochins.

It took a while to figure which one was our cochin. Shes a bit skidish barely getting her feathers now. We named her Socks. Had pastry butt for awhile but was able to treat it. We love her feathers that are coming in now.

You want a cold hardy, hefty, human friendly bird that doesn't skip out on beauty? This is your bird. I bought my girl seven years ago with a bunch of other hens and never regretted for an instant. She's top of the pecking order in my flock, but doesn't tousle with the other girls too badly. My only complaint was that when she was around two or three she got really broody for a whole six months. From research I know Cochins are pretty prone to this, so they make great moms, its just not what I was looking for.
