Description:
The Ancona is a relatively rare chicken breed. It has a beautiful "mottled" color pattern of black with white spots, and the American Poultry Association accepts both Single Comb & Rose Comb varieties. (Ours is a single comb.)
Like other Mediterranean chicken breeds, Anconas are closely feathered, active, good foragers, and good layers.

Questions
Baby Chicks: Ancona Female
They were energetic, and looked healthy as well as being pretty good sized. I figured they would be lethargic from the trip but they were not.

Baby Chicks: Ancona Female
I love my Ancona! She makes the sweetest cooing sound, very distinctive, almost like a pigeon. I think I will always need to have an Ancona, just because I just love her song so much. Incidentally, she also makes a distinctive complaining sound, which is the worst sound of my flock, but only occasionally and I don't mind it.
She is skittish--I need to be careful not to startle her-- and relatively shy, but her sweet call melts me when I walk into the run and she follows along cooing so sweetly.
Her 3 years of laying has been good. She's had both excellent stretches, matching my most productive girls, and extra long winter breaks. One recent winter she surprised me with a month in the middle of the winter, so I'm happy with her laying.
Regarding the big comb, I actually live in New England and got her by accident, as there was some confusion with the rose comb Anconas in the description a few years ago. The first year the freeze/frostbite was quite bad, but I didn't touch it and it healed just fine. Amazingly it never seemed to bother her; she showed no signs of stress, still laying well and milling about with her contented cooing sound that first winter. Her comb was smaller after that and more resilient, no issues since then. It's amazing how they can adapt like that. I wouldn't recommend such a large comb breed for NE of course, but I'm so glad I have her. I hope MPC carries the rose comb in the future, because in a few years I'll be looking for another!

We absolutely loved reading about your Ancona! Her sweet cooing sounds like such a charming trait, and it’s wonderful to hear how much joy she brings you. It’s also great to know she has been a good layer and has adapted well over the years.
We truly appreciate your feedback on the rose comb variety and will share your interest with our team. Thank you for being a part of the My Pet Chicken family—we hope your Ancona continues to serenade you for years to come!

Baby Chicks: Ancona Female
My Ancona is far more beautiful than the ones pictured with a greater quantity of white feathers (especially around her head). She started laying around 5 months and has taken a break for the winter, but she laid impressively sized white eggs.
Regina is beautiful (her ears are a very unique shade of yellow) with a large red comb and yellow legs with black splotches. She is certainly not a lap chicken but she does follow me closely around the run making noises that sound something like a seagull. She’s a joy to watch foraging and stays out of the fray when it comes to some of the other hens squabbles.

Thank you for sharing about Regina! She sounds like an absolutely stunning Ancona with so much personality. It’s great to hear she started laying early and produced impressively sized eggs before taking her winter break. Her unique coloring, seagull-like chatter, and independent nature make her such a special addition to your flock. Wishing you many more enjoyable moments watching her forage!

I wanted to take a moment to express our heartfelt condolences for the loss of your baby chick. From our communications with you, it's clear that you made every effort to care for her, and it's truly unfortunate that sometimes our best efforts fall short. While we worked together with you when you advised of the weak little one, unfortuntely, our efforts were not successful and we are so very sorry! We are here to help you with any questions or concerns about your flock you may have.

Baby Chicks: Ancona Female
I ordered one Ancona chick and she arrived healthy (and sexed correctly). She is now a year and a half old and is even more beautiful than the hens in the photos. She acquired more white in her plumage after her first molt. She lost a piece of her comb to frostbite during her first cold Maine winter but doesn't appear to be losing anymore in her second winter. She's the chattiest, prettiest, most skittish chicken I have, and the most predator savvy.

I feel like all 16 chicks are more active than the ones we have bought in Miami in the past. They are all thriving.

We got an Ancona added to our flock with a White Layer Assortment option last year and she has been a very pretty addition to our yard. She has a very large comb that still stands up and hasn't flopped over but it is almost comically large and makes her very easy to spot next to our Swedish Flower Hen that is black and white mottled. She did amazing in the heat this summer, and is unbothered by our winter temperatures even with the large comb. (We have a good coop set up that keeps them dry so frost bite is less of an issue when temps are below freezing.)
She lays a white egg that's Medium sized with a good strong shell 3-4 times a week quite consistently, she stopped for molting but is laying again in December with temps in the 20's. Very Nice breed, I plan to send some to my Mother's flock in Florida for Spring to add to her farm they will be a great option for her for the humidity and heat. Definitely recommend for hot climates.

Baby Chicks: Ancona Female
This was the first time having baby chicks shipped but was so excited and happy when they arrived safe and sound! This little girl is the smallest of the bunch but the most inquisitive of the flock. Because she's an Italian breed we named her Louisa. At 3 weeks old now, she loves to explore and is pretty independent and loves to cuddle. Can't wait to see her feathers change in the following weeks.

Thank you Brian for leaving a review for your Ancona chick, Louisa. She is adorable! We never get tired of hearing that our babies arrived safely. We are delighted you are enjoying her.
