Baby Chicks: Blue/Black/Splash Birchen Marans

Blanche is only birchen marans I ordered, and she turned out black. She is also the smallest but the first one of my new babies to lay a cute little pullet egg at 21 weeks. So exciting, two days in a row! They are dark, but not as dark as I expected. What was really amazing is that my ancient nine year old chicken took her to the nest box and showed her the ropes. They both sat for a while side-by-side but didn't lay. Two days later -- voila! She is friendly and gets along with all the girls. I like her!

We ordered 2 of these chicks, both arrived happy and healthy. Only downside is, we cut off their leg bands, so it’s really hard at this stage to tell them apart from our copper marans. Looking forward to watching them grow.

Can't wait to see how they turn out

I waited until my Birchen Marans had started laying and gone through her first molt to leave this review. The chick I received is black, and besides her foot feathers is almost indistinguishable from my Jersey Giant (who is a much more productive layer). Despite going through a hard molt she never achieved the Birchen coloring around her neck, which is not the end of the world. I bought her more for egg color than anything else. The problem is that her eggs are the same color as my Salmon Faverolles and lighter than my Splash, Lavender and Wheaten Marans. I bought her based on the description that her eggs are “as dark or darker than a Black Copper Marans. In reality her eggs are indistinguishable from most of the standard brown egg layers that cost much less. (If you’re looking for a more friendly Marans, my Splash Marans is an absolute doll. ) Ultimately, if I could redo my order I would have just ordered a Black Copper Marans, and I would suggest if you’re considering this breed that you do the same.

I {think} I received one blue and two black Marans. New chicken mom and I’m really bad and telling them apart. The greyish colored one is my absolute favorite baby. She is so snuggly.

Our babies we just got in April started laying! They are so sweet and calm!

The Darkest Eggs in my Flock!! These girls took a long time to mature, they never got much silver on them so they can easily blend into the flock and be overlooked, until they leave the nesting box! These girls (I have one blue and one black) lay the DARKEST most beautiful eggs!! They just recently started laying again after taking a few weeks off for the shortest days of the year and they are laying almost every day, dark chocolate eggs that are just beautiful. They look so amazing next to my other eggs it's like having art on my kitchen counter, the only problem I've had is the eggs are TOO pretty to crack open and eat!!!

We have two and they are hardy beautiful birds Eggs are dark brown with splashed chocolate all over the egg.

Bought a quite a few of these last year, a breed that I have had from top quality breeders in the past. Overall, the birds themselves were healthy enough. But never got the real birchen effects in their feathering, and they laid a decently chocolate egg, but not as dark as promised. I’ve been raising Marans for more than a decade, and understand how things go in the season. But I would say that even early in the season, these eggs were nice, but not amazing.

Baby Marans chicks arrived lively and healthy, one was left out of my order and customer service was quick to help out. I had ordered a variety of chicks and they were packaged with a heat pack and arrived in 1 day from ship date. Very pleased with the chicks and the company, especially the way they handled my missing female issue.

The male was appropriately tagged with the rubber bands. He is doing great. The bands were not hard to get off and I have encountered no problems. Exceptionally pleased.

All chicks are healthy and thriving. Very good customer service. Highly recommend My pet chicken! 🐔 👌
