Description:
The Barnevelder hails from the Barneveld region of Holland where it is so well-known that, according to the Barnevelder Club of North America, the Barnevelder name is synonymous with the word chicken. It is sought after there for its dark "chocolate" brown eggs, and while Barnevelder eggs in this country have lost some of that dark pigment, breeders here are working hard to change that. This beautiful bird with the in-demand, beautiful "double laced" feathers is hardy and quiet and doesn't mind being confined. In short, it makes a wonderful pet!

Questions
Baby Chicks: Double-Laced Barnevelder Female
I love my sweet Bebe, the Barnevelder. She was timid and stand-offish in the beginning and has slowly warmed up. This may be because she is one of the lowest on the pecking order. She wouldn’t eat out of my hand or even come near me when handing out treats but I realized it probably had more to do with the other chickens than me. She did seem to develop more slowly than some of the hybrids I have and I was a little worried she was stunted, but that was not the case. She starting laying right at 20 weeks, pretty dark brown egg with speckles. She likes being around me when I go out in the coop and just yesterday she hopped up in my lap!

Awww! Bebe sounds adorable! Some little ones are a bit more timid and take time to warm up - especially as you discovered - when the other birds push them out of the way! We are happy that she has come around for you in her own time and has begun laying her pretty eggs! We hope for many wonderful years with Bebe and her flock mates! Please let us know whenever you have questions about them or their care needs - My Pet Chicken is here to help!

I am really hoping she is a hen. Short wing feathers are making me wonder. So adorable so will have to wait and see.

Your baby is so adorable and we appreciate you sharing her photo with us all! We certainly hope that there is no mistake and that your baby will lay beautiful eggs in the future but My Pet Chicken does have a guarantee for the possibility of an error. Typically, it is very difficult to determine gender just by sight or behavior until your birds are much older - our reporting window opens at 14 weeks of age through 22 weeks for breeds other than silkies (silkies are bit slower to mature so we give them a bit more time). Our Vent Experts examine the babies as soon as they hatch by looking at more than 15 little tiny parts in their vent and do their very best to make sure you receive the babies that you order. We have our guarantees available for review under "Refunds & Returns" at the bottom of the website if you would like to have more detailed information. And, of course, if you have any questions about this or anything with your flock, always feel free to contact us by phone, chat or email - My Pet Chicken is here to help and truly cares!

Baby Chicks: Double-Laced Barnevelder Female
I purchased three chicks and all arrived healthy and were in my hands within 1.5 days. Out of my three chicks - the double laced Barnevelder is DEFINITELY the friendliest of the bunch even at a day old. Not flightly and lets me hold her. She is absolutely adorable and I've named her "Miss Pinecone". She is a super cute brown puff ball and was the least terrified of humans - I would highly recommend this breed.

Okay, so the part about these chickens being calm and quiet? Hundred percent true. I purchased one of these girls seven years ago and she is quiet, wary, and does not appreciate human company. Her attitude has not changed over the years. If you are looking for a human friendly bird, in my experience this breed is not what you are looking for. On the other hand, if you are looking for a calm quiet bird to round out your noisy flock, or you enjoy just looking at this beautiful gold and black bird definitely get one. Just be aware that she may need extra treats throw to her because she doesn't immediately rush up like the other birds.

Thank you for your very thoughtful insights on this great breed! They are an active and amiable bird. "Barnies" usually are a breed that can be easily tamed if you start at an early age as they do tend to be gentle and definitely kid-friendly. However, like most any living animal, we always have a few that may just have a different personality. We hope that she is bringing some happiness to your flock and please always let us know if we can answer any questions. We are always happy to help!

Baby Chicks: Double-Laced Barnevelder Female
Miss Oboe arrived healthy and perky, and changes in appearance by the hour, seemingly. She began looking like a fuzzy chipmunk, with a black racing stripe down her back, but now with actual wing feathers and not just fuzz, at five days she is looking quite sleek.
She loves to race back and forth in her enclosure, and attempt to prevent her sisters from sharing in her good fortune when she gets a treat, by imitating a pinball.
The ten year-old neighbor boys have chosen her as their favorite, and she gets a lot of attention and handling, which she's accommodating gracefully.
I can't wait to see her final, adult coloration. This is my third purchase of live chicks from mypetchicken, and all three transactions and deliveries have gone down beautifully. Miss Oboe will no doubt be a favorite amongst her eventual flockmates.

Baby Chicks: Double-Laced Barnevelder Female
She was smaller than the other 6 chicks. She seemed to be alright, just a little slower than the others. She stopped eating about 3 days old. I tried to feed her with a dropper of ground starter and water. But when she was 5 days old she died.
