Description:
Polish—you either love them or hate them! Not many chicken keepers are on the fence about this breed.
The lovers will crow about Polish being a very special and unique chicken breed, with their huge bouffant crest of feathers and v-shaped comb. They'll tell you that they love the relatively small size of the Polish breed, that they're super tame and lovely, and make wonderful pets.
The haters will tell you that their behavior can be a bit wacky since their crest limits their vision. They'll also tell you that Polish are unreliable layers. Some lay fairly well, and others... well, you never know what you're going to get.
When in a flock with more aggressive breeds, Polish will tend to be on the low end of the pecking order, and this can also play into rate of egg lay. The lowest birds on the pecking order won't be your most productive layer.
In short, Polish are sweet, beautiful exhibition birds and can be good layers in the backyard flock, but they're not reliable. Please note that our flocks produce a mix of bearded and non-bearded Polish.

Baby Chicks: White Crested Black Polish Bantam Female
For being only a few days old she, Maude, is not sociable at all. I can only imagine that she will get worse no matter how much I cuddle with her which is a shame. Beautiful colors, poor temperment!

Ah! The polish do tend to be a bit more on the "quirky" side of the personality spectrum. They can be absolute joys to be around one day and a terror the next! Sometimes this may be due to their usually being on the low end of the pecking order and may vent some of their frustration out on their poor flock keepers. In addition to cuddling Maude (I love the name!), perhaps some of these tips may help her become more sociable: My chickens run away whenever they see me. Can I tame them? Please let us know if we can answer any questions or address any concerns. We are always happy to help!

First time owning a Polish. At first she wasn’t friendly and screamed every time you picked her up. Now (14 weeks old) she is our friendliest chicken! She “purrs” when you hold her and she follows you everywhere.. We have 9 bantams and she is not on the bottom of the pecking order. Would definitely order a polish again :)

My 2 little beauties are the sweetest girls in our flock. All chickens will run to you wanting snacks, and some chickens seem to love your company and don’t care if you have food or not. This breed is at the top of wanting to just hang out with you of all of our sweet friendly chickens. They want to sit on your lap, your chair or just follow you around. Like a puppy. They can’t free range because they would be easy pickings for a predator. They are basically sweet potatoes and how we love them!!! Buy them! Buy them now!! Prepare for joy, sweetness and comic relief.

Puff, aka Pufferfish and later on just Fish, is surprisingly the leader of our flock of bantams. We give her haircuts every molt so she can see easily, and she is so so so social with us. Never broody ever, sometimes she just poops her egg out on the sidewalk with no care. Love my Fishy.

I purchased two of these and they are our favorite birds in our little flock. We do trim their crests so they can see, and it makes the world a lot bigger for them. Crazy will hop on my shoulder before I can stop her, and Sweet is docile. Both get the zoomies whenever we let them out, and Crazy barks like a dog!

My two gals, Cruella and Nigella, keep me in stitches. Everything they do, whether it is smoothing their feathers or examining a bug comes across as a comedy routine! That gorgeous, poofball of a head makes me smile every time I look at them! And, they are pretty friendly!
